People Tree Jiyugaoka: Our Favorite Variety Store in Jiyūgaoka

The variety store in Jiyūgaoka that we love the most is People Tree (ピープルツリー 自由が丘). The service provided by the friendly staff is impeccable and their products are Fair Trade certified. Organic and natural materials are used whenever possible to make their garments. All products are made in developing countries, and each tag tells its story. The background information on the tags gives its customers the confidence that the products they are buying promote sustainable livelihoods and safe working conditions for farmers and workers. Such an intuitive way to build brand reputation, isn’t it?

Besides clothing, People Tree also offers a range of products, including dried fruits, chocolate, organic tea, and coffee beans, all of which comply with Fair Trade principles. The dried fruits are made from pesticide-free and chemical-free fruits, making them a healthy choice for consumption. They also contain no additives so that you can eat them with peace of mind. Sugar-free dried fruits are also available, a pleasant surprise for their vegan customers.

The chocolate is made from carefully selected ingredients and is healthier than those sold at major supermarkets. It contains no additives or alternative vegetable oils. As it is made with a generous amount of cocoa butter, it is only available from autumn to early spring, when the temperature is low, and the chocolate does not melt easily.

The packages’ illustrations were done by a Japanese designer. While chocolate isn’t unique to Japan, People Tree’s chocolate can still be a good souvenir for your friends and families. Vegan chocolates are also on sale!

Our Visit to People Tree Jiyugaoka

When we stopped by People Tree Jiyugaoka, there weren’t other customers in the shop. The lovely staff gave us enough space to explore the store freely without feeling ignored or pressured. When we asked for her opinions about colors and sizes, she answered with patience.

What we felt most thankful for was that she went above and beyond to help us save money. After we paid for a blouse made using organic cotton, we decided to get a pair of handwoven gloves. She immediately refunded us the cost of the blouse after we realized that the combined cost of the blouse and the gloves would qualify for a discount!
