Biwako Terrace – The Best Place to Adore Lake Biwa

At the west shore of Lake Biwa on the Hira mountain range (比良山系), the Biwako Valley (びわ湖バレイ), situated at an elevation of 1,100 meters, is a famous ski resort in Kansai. From spring to autumn, it is also a well-known mountain resort. In July 2016, a long-waited observatory called Biwako Terrace (びわ湖テラス) was opened!


Former Chikurin-in Temple and the Stunning Garden Reflection

Amongst all the Satobō (residence of retired monks) in Sakamoto, the Former Chikurin-in (旧竹林院) is probably the most famous. Not only is it known to be one of the highest-rank temples in Enryakuji, but its garden was also designated National Place of Scenery Beauty in 1998.


Saikyō-ji – One of the Best Temples for Fall Foliage Hunting

Saikyō-ji (西教寺), at the foot of southeastern Mt. Hiei, is the headquarter of the Tendai Shinsei sect (天台真盛宗), which has more than 450 branches across Japan. The temple also gets more attention when fall foliage brightens up the scenery.


Hiyoshi Taisha – Mt. Hiei and Kyoto’s Guardian Shrine

If you are visiting Mt. Hiei in Shiga Prefecture, you can stop by Hiyoshi Taisha (日吉大社). The shrine is particularly stunning in fall. Also, if you are a fan of ‘Rurouni Kenshin’, you will want to visit the shrine as parts of the filming was taken place there!
