If you enjoy browsing apparel and accessories, visit Leberment (リベルマン) on Nakamichi-dōri Street in Kichijōji. The shop is opposite Kichijōji Nishi Park (吉祥寺西公園) and has a small cafe, perfect for taking a brief break. In addition to the owner’s carefully picked items, works from lesser-known artists can also be found at Leberment.
The shop owner is friendly and easygoing. You can strike up a casual conversation with him while browsing the fashionable items scattered throughout the store or while sipping your coffee.
The Kichijōji shop is Leberment’s third shop in Tokyo. The shop’s name means “to be playful and enjoy life freely” in French.
The collections on Leberment’s shelf represent the owner’s interests and hobbies. He hopes that the space he created could be a place that brings customers new ideas and happiness to their lives.
The drink menu is simple. For hot coffee, there are three different roasted levels. If the weather is warm, order a cup of iced coffee or a coffee float with vanilla ice cream. But if you are not big on coffee, you can grab a melon soda instead.
Our Visit to Leberment Kichijōji
We walked past Leberment on a rainy day on our way to Giovanni. What prompted us to stop walking further was the bags placed at the storefront, as shown in the Instagram post above. They are the kind of bag that can be used for many occasions. These bags don’t just look elegant but have several compartments for your things to stay organized in the bag. The two side pockets are handy too. They can hold a medium-sized water bottle and a folded umbrella at the same time. In addition, the zippers open and close really smoothly.
Loving the bags, we soon decided to purchase one. With the shop owner’s advice, we got a grey one and a khaki-colored bag. The light-grey color has been quite popular in Japan recently as it complements almost any color.
The best thing about the bags was the price. When we got them, they had a 50% off sale. Although Leberment doesn’t offer the tourist tax refund service, the Golden Week’s buy two and get 10% off storewide sale also meant that we didn’t have to pay any tax on our purchase.
Leberment’s shop owner offered us great customer service. He was around whenever we needed him for advice and answers. He would also let us wander around so that we didn’t feel pressured to purchase anything. Upon finalizing our purchase, he asked us to check for defects. When we raised the concern that the zipper on one of the new bags he brought out didn’t open and close smoothly, he promptly replaced it with another one.
The shopping experience at Leberment was the best during our time in Kichijōji. We will definitely revisit it, and this time, we will try their coffee!
