First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint (第一只見川橋梁ビューポイント)
The most popular spot to see the Tadami Line is the First Tadami River Bridge, located between Aizu-Hinohara Station (会津桧原駅) and Aizu-Nishikata Station (会津西方駅). Most of Tadami Line’s promotional materials were taken here. The photography spot is on the ridge, a 3-minute walk from Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station (道の駅 尾瀬街道みしま宿). The promenade stretches from the road station’s car park. The view from the viewpoint includes the arch-shaped First Tadami River Bridge, the natural beauty of Oku-Aizu, and, if you time your visit, the slow-moving train!
As soon as you get to Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station, you should see a large directory sign for the First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint. Around Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station, there are four spots from which you can see the First Tadami River Bridge. Follow the directional sign near the entrance of the roadside station, and you should reach viewpoint A. It is at the far end of the car park.
Viewpoint B is near the first set of staircases on the promenade. You will also find Tadami Line’s timetable for Aizu-Miyashita Station attached to the viewpoint’s sign (see the 3rd photo in the Instagram post). It gives you a quick reference for when a train is expected on the bridge.
While the view from Viewpoint B is magnificent, we recommend climbing up to Viewpoints C and D. You will get a wider view from up there. When the sky is clear, you can capture the First Tadami River Bridge and a full reflection of it in the river.
Unfortunately, when we arrived at the First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint, Viewpoints C and D were closed due to bears being spotted nearby a few weeks ago. Hopefully that won’t be the case when you get there!
How to Get to the First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint by Public Transport
JR Aizu-Nishikata Station (会津西方駅) is the closest train station to the First Tadami River Bridge. It is about 35 minutes away on foot.
Instead of walking, you can rent a bicycle from Mishima Town Tourism Association (観光交流館からんころん). It is just a 2-minute walk from JR Aizu-Miyashita Station (会津宮下駅). With a bicycle, it will take you around 15 minutes to get to Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station, where you can park your bicycle.
Tip: There were bear bells at the counter at Mishima Town Tourism Association for visitors to rent for free (2nd photo in the IG post).

What to Do at Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station (道の駅 尾瀬街道みしま宿)
After capturing some stunning photos of the First Tadami River Bridge with the surrounding nature, take a rest at Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station. Fresh local produce and craftwork are sold at Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station. While we didn’t pay much attention to the price tags of the craftworks, the fresh produce was really cheap. For example, a large bag of apples only costs us around 500 yen!
Vegetarian and Vegan Food at Ozekaido Mishima Juku Roadside Station
Kiribanatei (桐花亭) is the roadside station’s restaurant where you can overlook the surrounding mountains from the dining area. Unfortunately, there is no plant-based light meals. But that was okay, it was too early for lunch anyway. Instead, we got a paulowina charcoal soft serve. Although the idea sounds weird, it was delicious! Did the charcoal taste like anything? Nope, but the soft serve was delicious overall!
If you are vegan and are at the roadside station during lunch hours, you can have the soba noodles made with buckwheat flour from Aizu with salt. While noodles eaten this way can be a bit plain, it lets you taste the rich, natural buckwheat.
Tip: You can get either cold or hot tea and water from the restaurant’s dispenser (see the photo).
Seeing the First Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint from a Different Angle
You can also view the First Tadami River Bridge from the opposite direction from the north riverbank. Your photo would be taken from an angle looking up the bridge with the Tadami River in front of it.
Getting to this spot is tricky, however. From Aizu-Hinohara Station (会津桧原駅), you would drive towards the village center. When you encounter an intersection, turn right and follow the road. The spot is located along the river after going down the mountain road.

Tips:
☛ In summer, the early afternoon is the best time for photos taken from this direction with the front lighting. But if you want to see the river fog, try your luck before 8 AM.
☛ In autumn and winter, you will get more light after 9 AM.
