Karakoma: The Must-Visit Vegan Restaurant in Morioka

Karakoma (おやさい食堂カラコマ ) is a small but cozy vegan Japanese-style macrobiotic cafe in Morioka. It is a spot where those with a large appetite can feel satisfied afterwards. Not only is the food delicious there, but it is also healthy! Allium-free options (no onion, garlic, leeks, chives, or asafoetida) are available too.

About Karakoma

The owner, Miura-san (三浦 聖貴さん), has long studied Japanese cuisine and macrobiotic diet and is also a teacher of it. His cooking amazes those who have tasted it, showing that we don’t need chemical seasoning to make the food delicious!

Karakoma has a traditional appearance that is reminiscent of the old soba restaurant. The renovation completed to the former noodle restaurant makes the entire place brighter and more relaxing, reflecting Miura-san and his wife’s personalities.

Although they only speak Japanese, as long as you have a Translation App on your phone, ordering your meal shouldn’t be a problem.

The lunch set with several side dishes has a couple of mains that you can choose from, such as soy meat ginger pork stir fry (ベジミートの生姜焼き) or tofu steak (豆腐ステーキ). The ginger pork stir fry tastes similar to real pork!

The dessert there, such as tofu tiramisu, is incredible. A couple of takeaway snacks might also be available.

Tips:
☛ Reservation is accepted at Karakoma.
☛ Takeaway bento boxes are available.

Our Visit to Karakoma

We visited Karakoma on a weekday and were the first to arrive for lunch. By the time the restaurant opened, three groups of customers were already waiting around. The restaurant was full when our meals were served. Although the portion didn’t seem large, we were really satisfied by the time we finished the set meal. Each dish on the plate was adequately seasoned and went really well with the brown/multi-grain rice.

Several vegan seasoning and food packs were also sold at the counter. We even found an organic miso ramen pack! On our way out, we also noticed some organic vegetables placed on the shelf by the door.
