How to Spend a Night at Narita Airport and Layover Tips

Airplane tickets aren’t cheap. So, many budget-conscious travelers would look for cheap deals or take budget airlines. While these options may be cheaper, the flights often arrive or depart Japan in the early morning or late at night. What this means to the passengers is they need to spend a night in or close to the airport because the public transportation connecting Narita Airport with Tokyo doesn’t operate from midnight to early morning. The Cheapest Option to Spend a Night at Narita Airport’s International Terminal: The Bench

If you don’t mind sleeping in public areas, the airport has long benches that you can lie down on. The spots listed below are accessible 24/7.

  • Around Terminal 1’s international Arrival Hall on the first floor
  • On the first and second floors of Terminal 2’s International Arrival and Departure Hall
    • There are a couple of tables with charging points on the second floor.
    • The beef bowl restaurant, Yoshinoya, is also on the second floor. Note there is no vegetarian option.
  • Terminal 2’s North Waiting Area (北ウェイティングエリア)
    • The area is on the way from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3.
    • There are vending machines, toilet facilities, and a tatami-mat covered space.
    • There is also a small kid’s space.
    • The area is also equipped with mobile phone charging spots and power points.
  • Terminal 2’s underground floor
    • The area is close to the train station. There is a 7-11 that opens 24/7.
  • Terminal 3’s Departure Lobby on the 2nd floor
    • The area around the food court is recommended. Not only are the benches cushioned, but their size allows you to lie down.
    • There is a Lawson that opens 24/7.
    • The counter seats close to Lawson are equipped with mobile phone charging spots and power points.

If you don’t want to sleep on a bench and can’t access Narita Airport’s nap rooms, the next best option is the capsule hotel, Nine Hours Narita Airport. It is the only accommodation facility in Narita International Airport. Located on the underground level of Terminal 2’s second car park, its location is extremely convenient.

The sleeping pods and shower facilities can be utilized throughout the day except between 10 am and 2 pm for overnight guests. Whether you need a few hours’ rest or a place to stay overnight, it can all accommodate.

Narita Airport’s Shower and Nap/Day Rooms

  • Shower and nap rooms are available at Narita Airport‘s Terminal 1 and 2 on the 3rd floor after security check.
    • The business hours are:
      • 7 am to 9 pm for the rooms in Terminal 1.
      • 7 am to 9:30 pm for the rooms in Terminal 2.
  • Shower rooms are available at Terminal 1 on the 2nd floor before security check. You can refer to Narita Airport Map for the location.

The shower rooms are equipped with basic amenities, such as towels and body soap, so you don’t have to worry about bringing anything. The nap rooms resemble a hotel room with comfortable beds.

Children aged 12 and younger can also utilize the facility as long as an adult accompanies them.

How Much Does It Cost to Use Narita Airport’s Shower and Nap Rooms

  • The shower rooms cost 1,050 yen for the first 30 minutes, and 530 yen every 15 minutes thereafter.
  • The nap rooms (Single) cost 1,560 yen for the first 60 minutes, and 780 yen every 60 minutes thereafter.
  • The nap rooms (twin) cost 2,520 yen for the first 60 minutes, and 1,260 yen every 60 minutes thereafter.

How to Minimize the Shower Facility Cost

Because the shower facility at Narita Airport is charged by the time used, the longer you spend in the room, the more you have to pay. To minimize the time spent in the shower facility, here are some things to do before getting the shower room’s key:

  • Take out your toiletry set and change of clothes from your suitcase.
  • Remove your makeup.

Sora no Yu (成田空港温泉 空の湯)

If you have a short layover at Narita Airport, take the free shuttle bus to Sora no Yu to enjoy the hot springs. It is the best spot to relax before embarking on another journey. The free shuttle buses operate from around 5 am to around 10 pm. Reclining chairs are available in the rest area so you can take a nap.

Narita Airport has a 24-hour convenience store in each terminal. In addition to the usual items found in Japan’s convenience stores, travel supplies are also on the shelf. Of course, there are also ATMs.

The Observation Decks at Narita Airport

There are a few observation decks at Narita Airport. The opening hours are from 6:30 am to 9 pm. Between October and March, the observation deck is open from 7 am. All of them are equipped with Binoculars. The fence has openings for camera, allowing you to take photos of the aircrafts without being obstructed by the fence.

  • On the 5th floor at Terminal 1
  • On the 4th floor at Terminal 2 (2 observation areas)
